Family Room Mistakes You Should Avoid

By Jim Slate

David Artstone - The living room is the center of interaction within a home. Here family and friends come together to mingle and enjoy one another's company, to catch up on the day, or to share the experience of watching a good movie. When you invite people into your home where do you go? The living room of course! And so, in such an interactive and social setting, it is important that you and your guests are comfortable and relaxed.

Don't 1 - Don't Forget Yourself

The first person you have to make comfortable in your living room is you. If you feel anxious or agitated in this space, that emotion is going to be transmitted to your guests. You have to begin with yourself, and then try to accommodate the needs of others.

Step 2 - Don't Overdo It

Sometimes when you start decorating you find that it is a lot of fun. In fact, decorating can be so much fun, it can be addictive! However it is important to know where to stop. At a certain point adding more accessories, more details, or more features to the living room is going to make it cluttered. That is why it is important to take a slow, measured pace with your home dcor. Add items and accessories one at a time, and see how they make you feel. When you are finished, stop. Don't worry though, if you get that decorating itch again you can just redo the room every season, and revel in the joy of a brand new home every few months.

3 - Don't Overspend

The value of home dcor products is actually set by the stores, based on how much they think you want something. When a store decides they want to price something as expensive, they do everything they can to convince you that it is "higher quality". In actuality however, price has very little to do with good taste or quality, and the most expensive of items can be atrociously garish. When choosing decorative items for your living room, explore the whole range of products available, and don't let an inexpensive price tag convince you that something is low value.

Don't 4 - Don't Over Think

It is easy to get obsessed about your homes dcor, you live there! However decorating is an art, and it takes a relaxed mind in order to get it right. If you worry so much about how your home looks that you are no longer having fun decorating, it is time to take a break and get some distance between you and the project.

Don't 5 - Don't Worry!

You can't mess up so badly that your design can't be repaired. Just go slowly, and move things into the room one at a time, to see how they feel. Before any major projects get samples of patterns and colors and create a storyboard on canvas, or tape them to the wall to get an idea of how the colors work together. Whatever you do, just relax, and have fun with it.
