The 2009 Jeep Patriot New And Improved

By Andy Zain

The good points of the 2009 Jeep Patriot far outweigh the bad. The availability of awe inspiring off-road capabilities coupled with astounding cargo room top the list of functional features. The only negative is the acceleration capabilities, or lack thereof.

While the bulky boxy styling of the Patriot leaves no doubt that it is all Jeep, it doesn't handle like a jeep. If you liked the Cherokee you will love the newly improved Jeep patriot. With it's standard issue 174hp 2. 4L engine and manual five speed transmission, it is obvious that this jeep was designed, in the spirit of all the jeeps before, to see off-road duty as much as on-road errands. With the optional Continuously Variable Transmission, commonly referred to as the CVT, when applied to the front wheel drive sport trim model, can be powered by an 158hp 2. 0L engine.

Poor weather driving is improved through the use of the "lock" mode. The lock mode is available as part of the optional four wheel drive system. The other choice for the Patriot's drive train is front wheel drive.

The Freedom Drive Off-Road Group includes some equipment that is normally seen on SUV's with a much higher price tag. Some of that equipment is a continuously variable transaxle with low range that is engaged by activating the off road mode. Other features include hill descent control, an extra inch of ground clearance and locking differential.

The Patriot comes with a 9. 1 safety rating, and some pretty cool safety features. Let's start with the basic front and side curtain air bags, and then move on to the electronic stability program. As impressive as that is, you also get tire pressure monitoring and anti-lock brakes. Stability control is programmed to sense when the vehicles preset handling limits have been exceeded. At this point the system either decreases engine power or applies select brakes to aid the driver in maintaining control.

The Patriots available off-road capabilities are far superior to those of other class comparable SUV's. Also standard are some unique features in the form of overhead air bags to protect against head injury should the patriot roll over or be involved in a side collision.

Some new equipment for 2009 includes an upgraded interior, with improvements to the instrument panel, door trim panels, and centre console. The u connect multimedia system is unique, with it's 30 gig hard drive for storing music and pictures. As well as possibility for wireless cell phone link and a navigation system with real time traffic capabilities. The Patriot will most likely spend most of its life on pavement as a daily driver, but it's low price tag combined with its exceptional off road abilities make it a true dual purpose SUV.
