How to Plan a Wedding Shower--Fairytale Or Otherwise

By Aaron Hu

When you think "bridal shower", do you think of towels and soap? Are you a maid or matron of honor who has been entrusted with this task and haven't a clue what to do? Are you completely lost among the world of favors and games? This article will help you find the answers and make your bride's bridal shower the best one ever.

The first thing a bridal shower needs is guests. Talk to the bride and find out who she plans to invite, and whether or not this will be a coed shower. In addition, if she has a theme such as "fairytale wedding", make sure it shows up in the theme of the party. You can include Cinderella wedding favors for each guest.

But what if the bride has a coed party and still has a fairytale theme? If she has decided to go Cinderella, you can easily find other favors for the men. Granted, not many gentlemen will be interested in a high heel shaped bottle opener, but a classy chrome bottle stopper might be just the thing. Wedding favors shouldn't favor one gender over another; there's no need when today's websites have more than enough options for both.

Needless to say, the planner should have some idea where the party will take place. Indoors is always an excellent idea for any weather. Outdoors, however, allows the guests to enjoy the weather and fresh air while bonding with the bride. Be sure that you pick a suitable venue; also, make absolutely sure that the site is available. Many planners have been sorely disappointed when they planned the shower to take place at a park, only to realize that the city's bicentennial celebration is taking place on the same day-and in that exact spot.

Next, the planner should think about food. Will you have a sit down meal or a buffet? Or will you just have snacks instead? The food can also reflect a theme if necessary. Mexican wedding cookies, shakri tukra (Indian "rich" bread pudding), or Chinese hawthorn cake are all international delights that can emphasize the "happily ever after" theme. And don't forget to have the utensils in the bride's wedding colors!

Games, of course, should be played during a bridal shower. Perhaps your bride has a passion for old TV shows. You could play a game around famous couples-you provide the last names and the guests and bride must fill in the first names. Want to make it harder? Use the names of presidents or other political leaders instead!

Last but certainly not least, allow time for the bride to talk about her groom. Everyone will want to know how they first met, what she really knows about him, how she feels about his parents, and other information. Every soon-to-be married woman adores the opportunity to dish on her future husband, if for no other reason than to get rid of any signs of cold feet. Give her the opportunity to talk, and for others to learn more. You and the guests may walk away with a new understanding and appreciation for their relationship.

Planning a bridal shower is only as hard as you make it. These tips and ideas will help get you on the right path to the perfect party. Just be sure to communicate with your bride, and keep the activities fun and interesting. Who knows? People may be clamoring for your skills before you know it!
