Ereader Devices - Do You Really Need One?

By Sarah Brook

There is a lot of dispute whether one needs an eReader Device or not. The eReader is becoming ever more popular and even those who were against the gadgets can be seen in public with their Kindles, or other brands of eReaders.

There is, of course, a big satisfaction in reading a well bound book. You enjoy the process and you use your sense of touch and smell to supplement the enjoyment.

But, when reading on the eReader, you feel as if you're staring at yet another electronic gadget. Would it be useful at all to those of us that like to read? I have always been a book enthusiast, and always refused to read anything on my computer monitor.

I love the touch and smell of the paper. I love to reminisce what it was like to read this particular book for the first time 10 years ago, and where did that stain on page 143 come from. So, as a rule I was against any sort of electronic reading.

Everything has changed last Christmas when my parents got me an Amazon Kindle eReader as a gift. You can imagine my reaction when I unwrapped it. What were they thinking? Didnt they know me at all?

When my frustration started to wear off, I actually sat down to examine what had this strange device had to offer. It was a lot different than I though it would be. The first think that shocked me was, of course, the display.

The display of the eRreaders, the Kindle and others, uses eInk. This technology makes the page look as if it was real paper. There was absolutely no strain on my eyes, and I felt that I could almost convince myself that I was reading a real book.

After flipping through a few pages I came to a conclusion it was not as bad as I thought. And, since I like to travel a lot, this could be a perfect companion and my luggage could weigh a lot less.

Sure enough, reading my book at home is something I would never give up. But, having this eReader for traveling and commuting is a great bonus.

So, to answer the question, whether one needs an eReader device or not I think the answer is Yes. I wouldn't throw all my books away, but having an eReader bag could be a good idea if you like to read on the move.
