Advice on Buying New Windows

By John Mills

Investing in new windows for your home can be expensive " there are the actual windows to pay for and then the cost of hiring a company to fit them. You need to ensure that you choose the right style of windows to complement your property as well as choosing the most practical type to ensure that they will last for a number of years. Bear these tips in mind to make sure that your new window selection and installation process is a smooth one.

Styles and materials can greatly affect the overall look of your home. Not all materials will suit your house and as a result it might be a good idea to have a look at houses in the surrounding area for guidance on what looks good and what doesnt.

One of the cost factors for windows is the amount of panels that open. The more panels that open, generally the more expensive the window will be. However, before opting for the cheapest window bear in mind that windows with fewer opening panels can put future buyers off your home and as a result may reduce the value of your home.

Before fitting your new windows it may be wise to check with your local council that you dont require planning permission to install your windows. For the majority of new windows this will not be a problem as planning permission is mainly required for listed buildings. However, planning permission may be required if your windows overlook neighbours houses so it is always worth checking.

Consider investing in double glazed windows if you want to replace your old timber windows. Double glazing will reduce heat loss through your windows which will help you save money on your heating bills and they also provide good sound insulation. If you live on a busy road, near train tracks or on a major bus route then installing double glazing can make a real difference.

Security is an important factor to bear in mind when window shopping. Most windows will have a multi-point locking system; however, it is often possible to get a more secure locking system for a little extra or depending on the company, for free.

It is a good idea to ask for multiple quotes when looking for a window installation company, or any other product or service for that matter. Word of mouth from satisfied customers in your local area is always a good indication of a company worth commissioning to fit your windows.

When choosing a company to fit your windows, ask to see examples of the work they have done in the past. If you know someone who has used them in the past then this may not be necessary. However, contracting a company blindly may result in an experience you would rather avoid.
