You And The Benefits Of Switchable Glass

By Jocelyn Davidson

Man is in constant pursuit of things that can make living easy, comfortable, and beneficial. Nowadays, there are a lot of inventions and technologies available to cater to our every needs. Some are useful, while others are just weird. Choosing one that best suit you and your needs is sometimes the most tricky part.

With the array of technology available, we have one up for scrutiny. Switchable glass, also known as smart glass, are one of those technologies that started from commercialized buildings then found itself useful to homes. This piece of technology has glazing that allows it to turn from transparent to translucent with a switch of a button. Others also change with the application of light or humidity, particularly from the sun.

Switchable or smart glass, is a piece of glass that changes from clear to opaque when light, heat, or electricity is applied. It blocks some or all forms of wavelength, depending on the type you have installed. More commonly used in commercial establishments, this has now made way into most homes.

There are two typical kinds of this technology, the electrically operated, and the non electrical ones. As the name implies, the former are ran and controlled by a certain amount of voltage. This way the level of dimness of the thing can be manipulated. On the other hand, the latter operates on high temperature or light, mostly those emitted by the sun. Both, however, have all the basic benefits.

Low maintenance. It it not just about the glass. With normal windows, you have to use all forms of materials handy to keep the light out. Curtains, blinds, shades, even cardboard doubles as protection from the glare of the sun. Smart windows prevents light from pouring into your homes, thus eliminating the need for the blinds, and in turn eliminates the need for you to clean and wash them.

Saves you electricity by keeping the heat out. It has a certain property that allows it to block heat from the outside, especially when it is in its dimmed form. This in turn keeps the temperature inside your home low, which diminishes the need for your air conditioning to run too much during summer.

Speaking of heat, during nights when it is cold outside, this also doubles as your blanket. Without being activated, or even for those non electrical ones, it keeps heat inside. This means you decrease the use of your heater.

For those who are conscious of their well being, you will be delighted to know that this also can be good for your, well, health. We all know that the sun emits ultraviolet rays, which is harmful to your skin, among others. This screen, thankfully, blocks UV rays, aside from blocking also some or all forms of wavelengths that can cause all sorts of illnesses. Moreover, this property is also good for your home furnishings, particularly those that is constantly under the heat of the sun. This prevents discoloration and fading of your wood and fabrics at home.

So you save money from maintenance and electricity. You also get to protect not only your health but also the longevity of your furniture. If you think that all these is worth the price of having smart glass installed, then by all means, get it done.
