Apartment Furnishings That Use Space Efficiently

By Nelson Dixon

There are certain upsides to being an apartment renter. You have fewer financial restrictions than you would with a mortgage, and it's often much easier to clean the smaller space of an apartment than a house. However, with that reduced space comes the issue of storage and moving about the apartment comfortably. You simply don't have as much space in an apartment. But there are ways to use the space you do have efficiently, not the least of which is to furnish your apartment with space-efficient furniture and appliances. Here are a few of the options available.

Apartment kitchens usually aren't the biggest, and when you're working on a large meal, counter space can be valuable commodity. If you have a little bit of extra floor space, you might consider buying a microwave stand or baking rack. You can use the counter space that the microwave would have taken up for other appliances or as a workspace. The stand is often very simple, usually just what amounts to a small, waist-high table. A baker's rack is similar, but often has additional shelving, slots for bottles and hooks for pans and spoons.

Extra Shelves Inside Closets - Another space saver, making shelves inside of an apartment closet can allow the owner to make better use of the space. One idea is to get a hanging cloth divider for shoes and smaller items of clothing. Sometimes the landlord might allow a renter to construct permanent shelving inside the closet.

People who use slow cookers often REALLY use them, and for good reason. Slow cookers are great appliances that can save both time and space. Not only can you start a meal cooking and have it ready by the time you get home from work, but relying on it can reduce the amount of pots and pans you really need.

Drawers can be hugely useful as a storage solution. Some beds have drawers built into the frame, and making proper use of them can eliminate the need for a dresser. In general, it's a good idea to look for items that make use of space that often goes to waste. Furniture with extra drawers can be very valuable to someone with limited space.

Stemless Wine Glasses - Yes, drinking wine out of long stemmed glass looks classy, but how odd would drinking milk out of one be? Stemless wine glasses offer more versatility. Not only do they look good with wine in them, but they can be used for a variety of other drinks as well, such as mixed drinks or a homemade iced latte.

Usually, when a guest stays at one bedroom apartment, it means either sleeping on the couch or blowing up an air mattress. But you can make a more comfortable place for them to sleep by making the investment of buying hide-a-bed couch. While the couches are heavier and more expensive than an ordinary couch, they are often the most comfortable option available, and eliminate the need to store an inflatable mattress in the closet.

One efficient way to save space is place things on the wall that might otherwise require shelves or tables. Hooks are often a great way to accomplish that. You can use them to hang your keys, hats, coats, towels, jewelry; you name it. You can also use them to display unconventional art, such as hanging a quilt like a tapestry.
