The Different Types Of Yarn

By Teri Farley

An Asheville yarn refers to the filament that is weaved, forming to become one continuous strand. It is mostly used for weaving of textile or for manufacturing threads. The methods by which such materials are made heavily involve combing, carding, roving and then spinning of the staple fiber which may come in the form of wool, cotton or linen. Continuous filaments including nylon, silk and rayon may be considered staple fibers as well or formed as yarns.

In order to get the strong and smooth finish, yarns need to be twisted. The way in which these will be twisted can be through z twisting or twisting clockwise. There are also those that undergo s twisting or twisting counterclockwise. There are yarns coming as ply. These have minimum of 2 strands that have been weaved altogether.

There are also slub yarns which have areas that will be left untwisted. This is to vary their diameter for great ornamental effects. Ratine and Boucle yarns are rendered the more complex types. They are made by twisting yarns of varying diameters and tensions.

The viscose types are those which have been created with cellulose bases. They are known to come with very unique features, rendering them most suitable for a wide range of purposes, from crocheting to knitting projects. Many people also call viscose yarns rayon too. These do not come as fibers in themselves, but are processed bases used for creating durable rayon.

People who have a preference for thick threads may want to opt for worsted yarns. These are usually made out of woolen fibers. They come with very distinguishing properties, especially in how their fibers are prepared. Prior to spinning, these types are combed properly, removing short strands and retaining the longer ones in parallel. Finished yarns are not just smooth but easy to work with as well.

Organic yarns are very different from the aforementioned types. These have undergone production that is entirely organic in process. Organic types do not cause negative impact on the environment. This could also translate to their production being done ethically, by companies that maintain responsible attitude in terms of dealing with employees and yarn sources. However, the downside to these types is that they cost a lot more than the standard types.

A number factors need to be considered when choosing the type of yarn you want to use. Make sure that you think about for what you will be using the materials. If you are planning to make a bag, a cloth or any item made to hold things, then make sure that you will be getting durable or high quality fibers for the project.

Crafters should not forget how yarns come in varying colors. It is important that their color choice will be correlation to the theme of the project they are working on. There may be shops selling on limited colors though. Hence, checking beforehand will be beneficial.

Lastly, crafters should consider the price of the Asheville yarn they want to buy. Prices will typically vary by quality and type. These may also be affected by how many yards or meters will be required for the completion of the project.
