Wine And Resveratrol-How It Can Protect Your Heart

By Ben Teaf

Red wine has long been known to be good for the health. Of course, the health benefits of red wine come only from moderate drinking. The alcohol, as well as other antioxidants found in wine help prevent many heart related diseases by increasing levels of High Density Lipids (HDL), AKA good cholesterol in the body. The alcohol and the antioxidants also protect the arteries from damage.

Doctors are hesitant to tell patients that wine has many health benefits. This is because they are worried that they might be encouraging people to start drinking alcohol. Too much wine can actually do more harm than good to you. Learn about how red wine can benefit your health by reading this page.

Red wine, unlike other alcoholic drinks, is good for your heart. More specifically, it is the various kinds of antioxidants in wine that are good for the heart. There are many types of antioxidants in wine, but the most famous is resveratrol. Resveratrol is effective in protecting the linings of your arteries, decreasing levels of LDL and preventing blood clot formation.

Until today, there has been no research on resveratrol done on humans. The studies that have been done so far have been on mice. The studies on mice showed that resveratrol can prevent obesity and diabetes, which are both precipitating factors to many cardiovascular illnesses. The problem with this finding is that the amount of resveratrol used on the mice to reach this result is equivalent to more than 60 liters of red wine every day for humans.

It is very important to remember that the health benefits of red wine come from moderate drinking. Based on research, only those who drink moderate amounts of alcohol have decreased risk of developing cardiac diseases. Moderate drinking can mean different amounts depending on gender. For men, moderate drinking means two drinks a day, while for women, moderate drinking is defined as only one drink daily. A drink is equivalent to 5 ounces of wine. Men need more wine because they generally weigh more and have more of an enzyme that metabolizes alcohol.
