CNA Job Prospects

By Sam Ronalds

CNA, which means Certified Nursing Assistant, is a career that is very much in demand and there are many people attending the training program. The Certified Nursing Assistant is being offered a job very quickly because of the increase in the mortality rate. The population is aging due to the baby boomers of the 1950s and many of them need a lot of care in the nursing homes and hospitals as well as their own homes. The demand is high, and many of the existing CNAs are getting old and retiring, the job promises good future prospects.

The education program for a Certified Nursing Assistant is on the expensive side but this is really not a problem, because the CNA can easily get a job and once he gets it the perks and the salary are quite lucrative. Loans and scholarships are also offered in order to help the students complete the program.

The course can normally be finished within a span of 9 months and the timing of the training in most centers is such that one can easily hold on to a job or even be a homemaker, alongside. You have to, admittedly, put in a lot of sincerity and hard work into this program. Apart from this, you should also familiarize yourself with a lot of hospital jargon or terminology. Good computer skills would be a definite advantage in this job.

Additionally, your personality should be a pleasing and warm one with a lot of patience and friendliness in your nature. This is required because you will be directly dealing with aged and sick people who are badly in need of a smile and a few kind words.

They can either work on a full time basis or alternatively, on a part time basis. Another option is to work only on weekends so that you can work elsewhere during the work or even complete your education. They usually work under an RN who is a Registered Nurse or an LN who is a licensed practical nurse. This gives the CNA a lot of hands on experience but some procedures are barred to him as it may entail some legality or liability issues in the hospital. Places that you would normally work in include hospitals, nursing homes and Adult Day care centers. There are also Personal Home Care centers and assisted living where you would be required in the person's home.
