3 Important Attributes To Locate In A Great Surface Land Company

By Mike Johnson

When you're an oil company you need to make sure that you're going to be able to get your wells where you need them and on a strict timeline. To do this, there is often a lot of negotiation with landowners, making sure that they're okay with your drilling schedule, with the amount of land that you're going to be taking up, and many other factors.

A land company is responsible for speaking with landowners and ensuring that they will sign off on certain agreements for new oil wells. This is not an easy task, and not all land men are as good at what they do as others. It's important to find the right company for the job, otherwise, reluctant landowners who don't trust their land agents will halt progress and delay things.

When you're looking for the right land men, you have to make sure that you find a company that is strictly dedicated to honesty in all of their interactions. It is this forthrightness and honesty in a land man that will eventually win them the trust of the land owners and make negotiating for surface rights a lot easier in the future.

The next characteristic to look for is experience. An experienced leader is something that will filter down into every aspect of the organization and is something that great land companies have to offer. It's important for someone to have been in the business for a long time, as they will be able to train and facilitate the learning for subsequent generations of land men. The best land companies have experience working on their side.

Last but not least you should be looking for a company that takes pride in what they do and are looking to create a reputation of quality in their business. Although it might be possible to solicit a signature from a land owner once or twice, the important work comes in when you are trusted by the land owner, and they know that you're not going to do anything that isn't in their best interest. Look for a land company that has cultivated strong quality in what they do.
