Prevent Age Spots on Your Skin

By Kathy Roberts

Age spots are a sign of aging, right? Then why is that every year younger and younger people seem to be affected by signs of premature aging? The real reason? The increase in unhealthy lifestyle choices such as smoking and sun bathing.

Medically, these age spots are harmless, but aesthetically they can be bothersome. Read ahead to find out how to prevent premature skin aging.

Skin Rejuvenation Techniques

Step 1: Moderate Sun Exposure

Taking too much sun can take your skin from healthy to dull and outdated in a matter of months. Age spots appear as a result of solar exposure while freckles are a result of genetics. In order to reduce the damaging effects of UV radiation you need to apply sunscreen or sunblock.

Nowadays, SPF 30 is the lowest sun protection factor you should use. Cover all exposed areas with sunscreen or sunblock: neck, hands, face and ears. If you decide to leave the house wearing shorts or skirts, don't forget to apply sunscreen to your legs as well.

Use the appropriate clothing, it's also important. If you have to be out in the sun for more than 3 hours then make sure that you wear long-sleeved garments and a wide-brimmed hat to protect a larger area of skin.

During summer, stay out of the sun during the hottest hours of the day - 10 am to 3 pm.

Step 2: Maintain a Balanced Diet and Plenty of Exercise

Modifying your diet is a good aging skin treatment. By eating foods that are rich in calcium, iron and carotene like leafy greens, carrots, nuts and fish, you can help keep your skin free of age spots.

Drink less alcohol. By drinking too much alcohol you can actually damage your liver and increase your chances of developing age spots.

Having an active lifestyle that includes regular exercise is another anti aging treatment. It improves your circulation, which helps prevent age spots. You might want to try yoga or pilates in addition to your aerobic exercise routine.

Step 3: Find the Right Skin Care Product

Besides applying sunscreen, your skin will benefit with the use of certain skin care products. Rose hip oil is a natural ingredient with special skin care properties that can help treat skin problems caused by aging and sun exposure. Rose hip oil is high in Vitamin A (retinol) which redistributes and reduces pigmentation in the applied area, however it is not recommended that you go out into the sun with this oil on your skin.

Rose hip oil is also very effective in treating dryness caused by UV radiation. Its deeply moisturizing properties also help eliminate deep wrinkles and fine lines. Another skin care treatment involves microdermabrasion creams which can help eliminate the signs of aging by revealing healthy cells lying underneath the uppermost layer of the skin.
