There are many different tools and materials that are used in making bead accessories, but a basic starter kit is normally sufficient for making stylish and interesting accessories. It is a good idea to get familiar with the main techniques and tools as early as possible, though.

To start out, some of the tools that you will probably need include the beads that you want to use and some stringing material, or wire. You will also need a pair of scissors, wire cutters, a pair of tweezers, crimping pliers, bead threading needles, a beading board, a pair of flat nose pliers and a pair of round nose wires.

Most of the important essentials can be bought at a craft or bead store. There are also a lot of books available to help you to learn the techniques and skills needed. When designing your accessories, remember that although there are a lot of helpful guidelines to get you started, there are no hard and fast rules. Be creative and look for inspiration for colours and designs in nature, magazines, or whatever inspires you.

It is a good idea to start off with something small and relatively simple, like a basic bracelet. Experiment with colours and textures and soon your skills will improve and you will develop your own style. Do not be afraid to experiment, but just be sure that the colours you are using complement each other and that the finished product is balanced.

Another important thing to remember is that above all, an accessory must be functional. If you cannot wear it, it will be of no use. Keep in mind that a great accessory can be worn with a variety of different outfits.
