Design advice for beginners

By Alex Grey

Beginning in graphic design can be very overwhelming considering the amount of information and styles that exist and change constantly. As in any anything it is due to what you learned in college that helps get your started in your job. What really teaches on knowledge they will use for the rest of their lives is on the job experience.

As any individual would be when they start their first job they can quickly find themselves overwhelmed by the work load.Every University tries to educate you about everything as best as possible but they can only cover so much material, and even when they do cover a specific topic it is only for a limited time. This affects you when you get to the real world.

For example when I started my first design job straight after college; it began pretty smooth. I was strong in my design background and had a good starting point. The more time passed and projects spread into more diverse areas I started to realize that there was a lot that I still had to learn and a lot of new skills to develop. logos for example were some of the things, that I had covered in college but never spent months on. Now it was my job and I had to take over at the company and it took me some time to catch up to the level I needed to be in.

How did I get through it and get to become a senior artist? Research, I pulled every design magazine and book that company had.. thank goodness they had a wall full. I did research online and found company logos to reference what style of logos certain logo design studios would create for certain businesses. I referenced website templates from companies online like logoshrine, and tutorials and later on learned to develop and design my own company logos, and web layouts.

Just because you graduated doesn't mean you should stop learning. Always look up and research references, and study new design. Keep current with the yearly trends and move forward with all of your design styles. Never get stuck with one style make sure you adapt to new things. Design magazines are great and cheap source of inspiration and so are books like logo lounge which I have actually been published in twice. Always remember to never stop learning.
