The Arrogance Of Those With No Concern For Others Is Dreadful

By Justine Swallow

Terrible news comes to me from the riverside. It appears amazing, but although it is, or maybe because of, it being the legal close season for coarse fishing - as it has been at this part of year for more than one hundred years now - there have been illegitimate matches taking place during the weekend.

This is complete rubbish. There are brilliant rationale why the close season was installed, all to do with the continuity of the fish population, for the protection of the water environs and the protection of the hobby for all concerned. It's not only a matter of the ongoing supply of equipment by the fishing tackle shop, far from it. In fact, the proprietors will certainly be as concerned at this development as anyone else, because what these morons are doing will do more damage than the anti-fishing people to the sport manage in a lifetime.

At this time of year, fish shoal in massive numbers to spawn. They will prefer particular locations, which mean that anybody fishing in that spot is probably to be in for a fantastic day. And if you have a match with a riverside full of rods then the catch will be tremendous, a diary moment. But the fish will be affected. For one thing, say a female, stuffed roe finds itself snagged and fighting capture. In all likelihood she is going to dump the eggs with practically no likelihood of them being fertilised, so that will result in tens of thousands of fry, from every female caught, not hatching and repopulating the rivers.

And then the fish will remember and they will begin to shun that place in coming years which means that no matter how good the bait and tackle sold by fishing tackle shop will be, if there are no fish there to begin with, everyone is certain to be dismayed. There is precedent for this since the same thing occurred on the canals in some parts of the midlands. No one goes fishing there now as there isn't much point you see. There are scarcely any fish.

The level of the utter selfishness that a handful of people decide that, they can't pause fishing for a few weeks and risk wrecking the waters for everyone else, putting who knows how many fishing tackle shop firms at risk and their people out of work, is stunning. I cannot begin to recognise it and the law needs to be enforced and stop it before it is wrecked.
