Important Advice About Carpet Cleaning

By Adam Webster

Carpets have been used for centuries inside homes. They are durable, easy to fit and will enhance the look of any room. During those cold winter months, we appreciate our carpets even more. To keep your carpets looking as good as new, here are some dos and don'ts about carpet cleaning.

Some carpet cleaning materials on the market contain poisonous chemicals which could harm you, your family and your pets. Before buying any product to clean carpets, read the label very carefully to ensure the contents are friendly to people and the environment. Select a mild cleaning material that contains a minimal amount of chemicals.

Carpets should be cleaned regularly. If you don't clean them often, the dirt is going to be more difficult to get out and you will need to use a carpet-cleaning liquid with strong chemicals. Look at the label on your carpets before they are laid and read the cleaning instructions.

There are numerous carpet-cleaning services available. Many of them are one-man/woman operations so their fees are very reasonable. They will come and do the whole job quickly and efficiently and your carpets will be properly cleaned. If you want to do the job yourself, you can hire a machine.

Carpets that are not properly laid are much harder to keep clean. So before you get your brand new carpeting laid, get the job done by a professional carpet layer. The underlay is another important factor - it should be suit the texture and thickness of the carpet. As soon as you see a stain or a spot on your carpet, clean it immediately.

The biggest culprit of dirty carpets is the dirt on our shoes. This can be greatly reduced by placing big attractive mats at all external doorways to your house. Make your family and friends wipe their shoes on the mats before they walk on your carpet. Vacuum the mats daily. And when it rains make everybody take their shoes off before walking on your carpeting.

Your vacuum cleaner should have a powerful suction as well as the necessary attachments for cleaning in hard-to-get-to places. It is recommended that all carpets be vacuumed every day. If you do this, you won't need to clean them so often with a chemical cleaner. A powerful vacuum cleaner will suck up the dirt before it gets a chance to bury itself into the carpet.

If something spills onto your carpet, for example a glass of wine or a cool drink, act quickly! First try to remove the stain with cold water. If that doesn't work, use a product that is widely used to eradicate stains. Always keep a supply of a good stain remover in your home.

When you are cleaning your carpets with a carpet-cleaning product you must wear gloves to avoid the chemicals from coming into contact with your skin. Many allergies are the result of certain cleaning products. Also wear protective eye wear. Never use any carpet cleaning product that contains the chemical called tetrachlorethylene. This chemical can harm you and your pets.
