Special Arrangements at St. Lucia for Disabled People

By Edward Watkinson

Situated in the middle of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, St. Lucia is one of the most famous holiday destinations. With a width of 27 miles, this small island is quite renowned as a vacation spot. After the British rule in 1979, this island, which was a colony under the French rule, became a self-governing state of the Commonwealth of Nations.

Located in the Caribbean, the main attractions at the island are the sandy white beaches and clear blue waters along with the tropical climate and lush scenery. It is a place that has various activities to suit people with all kinds of interests. When one thinks of a Caribbean holiday, the few things that come to mind are tours, hikes, water sports and partying. It may seem that a place such as St. Lucia might not be suitable for people with any disabilities as they would not be able to take part in these activities. This is not so. There are many attractions that St. Lucia offers for disabled visitors so that they too can enjoy their holiday to the fullest.

In the past few years, there has been an increase in the awareness of rights for disabled people. This has motivated disabled to activate in all normal activities of life. The Caribbean island has special features which are friendly and convenient for disabled people. Most of the hotels and resorts at the island have particularly organized rooms for the people, where they get a good treatment. Apart from that, all places have access for wheel chairs to easily move around so that disabled can also become a part of the fun. A team of specialist is especially dedicated for taking care of disabled people who are interested in snorkelling and diving in the sea. The Diveheart foundation at the Caribbean Island focuses on the enjoyment for disabled people during their holidays. The warm water of St. Lucia tends to be quite soothing for people with sore muscles since it is not cold.

In June 2006, an organization known as Disabled People International (DPI) held a seminar on ?Inclusive Tourism in the Caribbean Region? in St. Lucia, and is actively working to make St. Lucia an accessible tourist destination. Another such organization is the St. Lucia National Council for Persons with Disabilities.

Prior to the landing of the disabled tourists to the Caribbean, it is wise to work really hard in arranging things for them. All special requirements should be taken care of in order to avoid any hassles. Travel agents can also inform the airlines as well as the hotel, about the condition of the person so that they are handled well. Since the internet has made everything so easy in this world, it helps a person is booking holidays and vacations as per the requirement of the tourist.

Overall, St. Lucia is a good holiday option for people with disabilities, and promises to provide an exciting experience.
