The Great McGinty: This film was Sturges' directorial debut (and Oscar winning screenplay) and isn't up to his later comedy classics, however Donlevy is phenomenal as the bum who is put into the governor's chair by crooked politicians and then blows it all by trying to be truthful. Cast includes Brian Donlevy, Muriel Angelus, Akim Tamiroff, Allyn Joslyn, and Louis Jean Heydt. (81 minutes, 1940)
Hannibal Rising: Here we see Hannibal as a youngster at the end of WW2 when he witnessed Nazi collaborators abusing his younger sis! As a youthful adult (Ulliel), empowered by his Japanese mothers sibling, he hunts down the killers and imposes cruel reprisal. A good piece of work however ponderous, dull and over donel, albeit on no account as gory as may be anticipated. Cast includes Gaspard Ulliel, Rhys Ifans, Gong Li, Helena Lia Tachovska, Dominic West, Aaron Thomas, Kevin McKidd, and Richard Brake. (121 minutes, 2007)
Bleak Moments: Leigh's directing debut is a strong, intensely human drama, which charts the plight of a desolate office worker (Raitt) who looks after her retarded sibling and wishes that her relation with a school teacher can develop into to matrimony.
