How To Begin Learning To Play The Guitar

By Mike Wong

If you love performing, you will throughly enjoy trying to play the guitar. There's nothing more fun than showing off to your friends and family by playing their favorite guitar songs. Unfortunately, it is not easy to learn guitar for beginners especially if you don't have anyone to teach you. It takes time to master the guitar, and if you get frustrated easily, you may quit before you are able to play anything worthwhile.

To be successful guitar player, you need to start from the beginning. First off, your guitar needs to be in tune, otherwise anything you play will sound horrible. If you don't tune your guitar on a regular basis, the strings will become stretched and sound distorted. The standard tuning for a guitar is E-A-D-G-B-E. While there are other tuning you can use, it is best to start with this one first.

Once your guitar is in tune, you can start playing some notes with it. To play a note, take one of the strings, and press down on it on one of the frets with one finger, and pluck at the string with your other hand. Play around and do the same thing with different frets on the same string. Congratulations, you are playing the guitar.

With this new found ability to play notes on your guitar, you will want to start learning some chords. Looking at a standard guitar chord chart, try to find a few chords that you can play. It will take some practice before you can start play any chords properly, but don't get frustrated. You will get the hang of them, and eventually you should be able to go back and forth between a few alternate chords at once.

You may become bored playing these simple notes and chords. Nothing will get you more excited about playing the guitar than being able to play your first song. To start, we are going to look for some guitar tabs to play. Guitar tabs are great because they allow you to start playing songs without having the ability to read sheet music and there are tabs for almost any song. The tabs are a simple diagram that shows the 6 guitar strings along with numbers that represent the fret you should press for each note. What you should do is just pick an easy song to try and go over it until it becomes second nature for you to play. Take your time, and you will be playing the song in no time. Although there are still many skills to learn, you are now on your way to mastering the guitar.
