Using Credentialing Software to Stay Up-to-date on Standards

By Hansel McDonough

Physician credentialing can sometimes be a complicated process. It involves not only tracking and verifying licenses and certificates, but studying a doctor's performance as well. In addition, according to the OPPE standards, this information must be reviewed on a regular basis.

The best way to achieve all of these goals is with credentialing software. It makes credentialing simple by keeping all the information in one place and helping a hospital to decide what information to collect and when.

First, you have to input a physician's information into the program, and then scan in his certificates and licenses. After this has been done, certain people in the hospital can view the procedures a physician is able to perform. Then the program informs the hospital of the licenses expiration dates about three months before it happens.

Credentialing software can do a lot more than simply credential verification. It also makes the task of compiling a report about a doctor much easier. Also, it tells the hospital when it is time to look over the information.

When something happens that knocks the doctor out of compliance with expectations, he receives a flag on his case. This occurs so that fellow physicians or hospital employees can know his case standing on the system. Additionally, the hospital may see if they can help in any way.

Credentialing software also contains any forms that may be needed during the credentialing process, and it has the capability to automatically enter information on them about any physician in the system. If a needed form does not happen to be in the system, it can help hospital personnel to create it and save it in the program.

Any meetings that are needed can also be scheduled right on the system. Members of the credentialing committee can sign in, view information, and vote on candidates. This not only simplifies the process, it saves paper as well.

CME credits are another item tracked with the program. Credentialing software keeps tabs on credits earned, and which ones still need to be earned by the physician and others in the hospital. If the hospital uses this system to its fullest, it is simple to maintain currency on privileging and credentialing and also every area of OPPE standards.
