Interesting Facts About The Flower Industry

By Lizbeth Nathaniel

With sales going beyond $25 billion annually the flower industry is definitely blooming still. In the United States alone you are sure to find more than 15,000 retail flower shops where customers can get bouquets and arrangements to match any event they have. The flower industry will introduce you to some of its fun facts too.

Most of the flowers we buy come from two countries, either Colombia or Ecuador. Colombia produces almost 80 percent of the world's flowers and Ecuador produces about 15 percent of the worldwide flower market. Mexico, Thailand, Guatemala, the Netherlands and the United States also produce a small percentage of the world's flowers. In the United States, more than 75% of all flowers come from California.

There are only about 35% of all the flowers and plants grown worldwide that is being sold in both online flower shops and retail flower shops. As for the flowers used in flower beds, as garden plants and as decorations for business places, parks and yards, they take up almost half of all flowers produced. The remaining then are those flowering houseplants and green houseplants although these too are often sold by florists.

Of all the flower bouquets and arrangements, majority of these are actually bought by women. Do you know that men are noted to buy only 20 percent of the flowers where they usually do so on Mother's Day or Valentine's Day? Another surprising fact is that most often flower purchases are done not because of an occasion but purely out of the need to decorate or at least give to a family member or friend randomly.

The biggest selling season for flowers when it comes to celebrations or events in a year would be Christmas or Hanukkah. Poinsettias are among the flowers most sold during these holidays. For flowers sold for a specific occasion, about 30 percent of them are sold during this time of the year regardless whether they are for gifts or decorations. Next to it, florists are most busy during Mother's Day and then Valentine's Day. As predicted red roses are best sellers on Valentine's Day even if mixed bouquets along with other roses are great sells as well.

When you browse through the offerings of your local San Clemente florist or Dana Point florist, you should keep in mind that these flower shops offer more than just flowers. Bouquets of balloons and gifts that combine flowers and chocolate are very popular. Many Oceanside florists also sell gift baskets via their websites. You'll also find interesting options such as contemporary floral arrangements, plants such as bamboo and even orchids.
