Starting Your New Life Post-Graduation

By Franklin Skribbit

As you move away from home to pursue your dreams, whatever they may be, you will probably experience homesickness at some point or another.

Get Excited

First of all, even though they expect that getting a good job will be difficult, most think that they will enter a good job with good pay. Unfortunately, for most students, their expectations will fall short.

While most recent graduates are able to find jobs, the pay and satisfaction with those new jobs are not as great as they anticipated. Many don't receive the kind of job they really wanted, don't get as much pay as expected, and don't get as much guidance/training as they anticipated. But the good news is they still have reason to feel hopeful.

A huge de-stresser will be organization. On the first day of class (or whenever you get your syllabi), sit down and write down all your known due dates in one place. This will help you visualize when you will be busy, when you have big projects due, and when you'll need to start working on certain projects or assignments. Having everything in one place will help you remember important dates, tests, projects, and so on. It will also help you prepare in advance for particularly busy days or weeks.

As such, now is the time to immerse yourself in your new surroundings. Check out the activities that are only available in your new city. Walk around the area and find a cool local coffee shop or a vintage store. Check out museums, hikes, and parks that are only available here in your new town.

As you become more acquainted with the awesome things your Ogden college campus has to offer, you will find your new place becoming a home.

In fact, working a year or two after getting your undergraduate can build your resume and help you get into a better university, which in turn, will get you a better job after you obtain your next degree.

Perhaps one of the most disastrous start-of-semester mistakes is procrastinating the first few assignments. Start working from day one, even if the first due date isn't for another week. Not only will you not have to rush your first assignments or let your work pile up, but you'll get in the habit of getting assignments done on time or early. This will be a huge help to you mid-semester when things start getting really busy.

Get Help

Around 40% of students that did complete an internship got a job as a result. Although that is less than half, it is nothing to shirk at. Even if you do not get a job directly as a result of an internship, the experience and references you can get through an internship will help you get a better job.

By taking charge of your homesickness, you can battle it and become happy with your new situation instead of spending all your time thinking of the old!
