Handling Homesickness In College

For many students, college means that you are away from home for the first time and on your own. The feeling of isolation that comes from not knowing anyone and being surrounded by an unfamiliar place can lead to an intense longing to return to what you know and love. Homesickness is a real thing and it is a very normal thing to experience, even for those of us who have been out of the house for several years or even several decades.

Homesickness isn't fun and there's not any formula for getting rid of it permanently, but there are a few things you can do to help ease the pain of missing home. While all of these things will not work for everyone, a few of them may work for you. Bring a Bit of Home to School

Take Inventory and Do Research

As you are making important decisions for college and your future, it is important to keep your post college goals in mind. If you are intending to enter the workforce directly out of college, your decisions will be different than if you intend to go on to graduate school.

Know When You're Going Home

Get Advice from a Trusted Source

If you are unable to visit regularly due to distance and/or finances, make sure that you keep in touch. Phone calls, texts, skype dates, and even snail mail can be a welcome reminder that there are people in the world who love you, miss you, and with whom you belong. And let's be honest, there is nothing like the joy of receiving a hand written letter or a small care package in the mail. If you start the correspondence it is likely that your family will continue it.

Get Out and Get Involved

Know What Your Options Are

When it comes down to it, the decision of whether or not to have a minor is up to you. Let your goals, ambitions, and passions make the decision for you.
