Proper Maintenance of Disc Brakes

Components of a vehicle's braking system are supposed to wear out and when such things happen, they will lose their efficiency. How many times should an automobile's braking system be examined? Experts recommend that the principal components of the brake system be examined annually or roughly every 10,000 miles. How often the brake system examined will dependent on things like the way you drive, the age of your automobile, the kind of braking system, whether or not you reside on hilly compared to flat areas, highway or city driving, and the sort of braking system that you possess.

Looking within the hood - Confirm the amount of brake fluid in the master brake cylinder tank. Load it when necessary. Remember not to let any type of dust or dirt goes into the tank. If you wish to add more than 2oz of brake fluid routinely, there might be a leak anywhere in the brake system. The brake fluid must be clear, not dark whatsoever. In case it is, it can be time to get it changed.

Checking out the Brake System when driving - If the brake pedal heads almost to the floor or will lose its stiffness, there could possibly be a leak somewhere in the braking system or the brake fluid level within the master brake cylinder tank has become low. A vibrating or pulsating effect in the brake pedal and/or the steering wheel will be a sign that the brake pads and rotors or brake shoes and drums must be resurfaced or replaced. A mild squealing noise is usual, especially if the vehicle is cold. If you get to hear a metal to metal sound, get your brakes examined quickly.

Below the Car - Take a look at the metal brake lines that work the length of the car as well as the rubber hoses that provide the brake fluid to the brake calipers and ensure that the lines and hoses are not harmed in any respect and also that they are totally free of any moving or heat making parts.

Rotors with massive scratches should be swapped out with brand new ones or resurfaced.

Inspecting Drum Brakes - On drum brake systems, the various components that can deteriorate are: brake shoes, drums, wheel cylinders.

Get rid of the drum to be sure the inside can be scrutinized. Take a look at the interior of the drum for any damage that is made to it. Any brake dust swelling should be taken away with a brake cleaner. In case there are heavy scratches to within the drum, change both drums. A wheel cylinder that is flawed will leak brake fluid from its sides.

Whenever performing on the car's braking system, do not inhale any brake dust. It is suggested that you use a face mask when doing the job on the brakes themselves.
