Basic Topics Of The TEAS Test For Potential LPN Students

The TEAS Exam, or Test of Essential Academic Skills, is used to help identify aptitude as a baseline for students who want to continue their educational work into nursing or other post-secondary pursuits. The purpose of the exam is to show that students have a strong foundation of knowledge in the areas of science, math, English, reading, and language. Schools and other programs use this exam to help with decisions about accepting or eliminating potential students.

Each TEAS exam is computer based and generally includes 170 questions which are separated into four categories. The science section covers chemistry, biology, physiology, anatomy, and physical science. It requires are good base of knowledge about scientific reasoning and principles. This part has 30 questions to be answered in 38 minutes.

The math portion lasts 56 minutes and includes 45 questions. Geometry and algebra skills are covered along with word problems and algebraic equations. Basic algebra knowledge required includes metric conversions, decimals, fractions, percentages, and ratios.

English and language usage has 55 questions on each TEAS exam to be completed in 65 minutes. This requires understanding of sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. It also covers how to use words in context to show an overall grasp of the language and its proper use.

For the reading section, 40 questions must be completed in 50 minutes. This portion of the exam involves reading passages of varying lengths and answering questions on the subject matter. Students should be able to read accurately and quickly. Basic skills include the ability to comprehend paragraphs, make inferences, and come to conclusions.

The standard TEAS Exam is offered at colleges and educational institutions for students of any age or academic background. There are no prerequisites and no enrollment requirements. Students who want to continue their education in a Licensed Nurse Practitioner (LPN) program need to score well on the exam to be considered for admission. This ensures that applicants have the proper knowledge and aptitude required for succeeding in nursing programs.
