What Is Article Marketing?

By Dave Templeton

Submission to an article directory is rising in importance as a new way to promote products and make money. Advertisers are starting to shift from print or TV-focused campaigns, and searching online for new markets. Internet advertisers can outstrip regular media advertisers despite their diminutive size. The benefits lie in the flexibility of an ad's content, which can be changed at any time, the encompassing audience found in the Internet, and the low price of reaching that audience.

Article marketing is all about writing articles to explain what you are selling and to advertise simultaneously so that visitors can follow the link provided to visit your homepage. Your personal link will be found in a bio box, but in the end, an interesting, informative article will generate more hits than a pile of links. Articles are organized and archived in directories such as Ezine.com. These directories have large audiences, enabling you to present your writing to many people with less hassle. However, many articles are rejected each day for failure to meet the set rules.

There are stern prohibitions against things such as hate-mongering and profane language. The worst violators can expect to be completely banned. Article-writers should read up on the directory requirements for information about correct formatting, language and length. Meeting directory guidelines is the first step, but your article should also be comprehensible to a visitor looking for information.

Articles that are duplicates of others will not be accepted by article directories. Providing relevant search terms is also important for getting your pages visited. Narrow search terms will target those searchers most likely to buy, but may miss out on a larger audience. By definition, broad search terms will put your page in front of a wide range of browsers, but very few will be looking to buy.

Search engine optimization is key because it places your page on the first page of search results. To attract more views, you should use qualifying terms. These are terms like instant download, free shipping, automatic, immediate, and free, but do not use them to excess.

To generate good keywords, put yourself in the shoes of the target audience. Popular keywords will be easy to discover if you look through the hot topics in article directories. Keywords with more related articles are the ones you'll want to target. A short search in a directory will give you a lot of help here. Check out some of the newest article marketing software to find products that can automate and simplify many of the steps involved.

In the fiercely competitive world of online marketing, search engine optimization can give an owner the potential to compete with larger, better-funded companies. If you have a writer's block, ask friends and peers for feedback. When you build your own brand, you can shrink the size and number of your competitors.

Writing for an audience involves a combination of perspectives. You must be able to write well, but also address audience interests thoughtfully.
