By Ricky Pringle

Do you have a big trip coming up? Is the Big Apple on the itinerary? This is one of the most popular destinations in the world, but because of the number of attractions, New York can be a little overwhelming to people who don't know where to start.

When you consider all the attractions New York has to offer, the Statue of Liberty has to be one of the most popular. This is really a place that you just can't miss. It stands on the Hudson River at the harbor of New York where it is the first thing arriving visitors see as they approach the city. For many, many years it has stood as a symbol of freedom and independence, and it can be a particularly memorable part of the trip.

Second outstanding attractions New York is the Empire State Building. It has been the location of many famous Hollywood films and has made a mark in the memory of every audience. This iconic skyscraper was opened on May 1, 1931 and is still a definite must-see for any visitor. About 20,000 people walk in and out of the building each passing day.

Possibly the most famous district in New York, though, is Times Square. This is one of the attractions New York has maintained for over 100 years. At first it was called Longacre Square but the name was changed when the New York Times Company made a home there in 1904. This has also been the site of the famous New Year's Eve party since 1907.

Or how about the attractions New York has that revolve around a serious sports scene? Madison Square Garden is one of the most well known sports arenas in the country. It can accommodate around 20,000 people for basketball games with the New York Knicks or hockey games with the New York Rangers. It's an easy way to view an exciting sporting event.

Interested in history and culture? Then the American Museum of Natural History is another must-see. It remains the home of the most relevant collections of history and other disciplines. Scientists from all over the world visit the museum and it still remains a travel delight for adults and kids alike.

Central Park is a great place to spend a nice afternoon in a beautiful setting. Sometimes called the garden of Manhattan, it measures in at 843 acres giving you plenty of room for walking, running, playing, or just taking in a nice concert. Estimates say that the park is visited by around 25 million people a year, making it one of the most popular parks in the whole country.

One final attraction worth mentioning is the famous Wall Street. Located between East River and Broadway, this is the home of the New York Stock Exchange. So much of the financial world centers around this place, and you can see the place and tell everyone you have been there.
