The Evolving Trumpet

By Jim Samposzi

The trumpet, an instrument of the woodwind or brass collection, is typically made out of brass or bronze and has: a mouthpiece, horn end, a spit valve, and finger controls. The trumpet is among the instruments that are fully chromatic because it consists of three separate keys for tone control. Some can also include a trigger operation to fix bad notes by the use of the three main keys. This line can be used during play and the change is so slight that the audience would not notice. The spit valve is there to release any mucus that has made its way into the trumpet. The history of trumpets is fascinating and trumpets go as far back in time; as far back as 2000 B.C.

The melody of trumpets are created by the collision, inclusion, or emulation of the three finger controls. The sound produced is made from the vibration of the musician's lips on the mouthpiece and then manipulated by the keys before the tone gets to the horn, or end, of the instrument. The collision of combinations of tones became more and more important to the exploration of various styles of music. Since the finger controls can be changed to produce any sound, all brands of music has been known to include a trumpet in certain circumstances.

The trumpet by nature, is pitched specifically for the soprano range of tones. This means, the chromatic range of pitches produced are from F sharp and back to C - before the clef that allows for treble generation. But, the abilities of this instrument are not confined to this range; some musicians can create notes in the G and high C range.

Trumpets, like other instruments, come in several different styles and types. Some are preferred over others. In addition, and because of the variation they differ widely in dollar range. And, some have other capabilities in pitching that do not come standard. The most well-known types and styles of this instrument are:

Piccolo, Brass, Herald, Natural, Slide and Bronze

This incredible instrument was invented in 2000 B.C. where it was used in religious service. The first kinds included objects to create sound, like: a stick of bamboo, or an animal horn, or bone. The Christian bible has many references to trumpets and some were pulled from in the tomb of the well-known Egyptian King, Tutankhamen. From the 14th century, someone invented the folded trumpet that is like trumpets of modern days where the metal tubes are folded and arched from bell to lip position. The first trumpet was merely straight and long with a wide part on one end and a mouthpiece on the other. When operas were popular, the trumpet was put to the stage in 1607 during a famous Opera titled Orfeo. As the modern world developed, trumpets were sounded to send military communications but in time were played in musical productions. In the 19th century, trumpets became an important instrument in symphony orchestras. Today, the trumpet can be seen in jazz groups, military groups, marching groups, and even rock groups.
